Support United Foundation’s Nets Go! Campaign wkf2011 l 2011.07.15

The Maeil Business Newspaper has been supporting the United Nations Foundation’s Nets Go! campaign and joining the movement to end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015, a goal set by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Malaria is one of the gravest global health issues that we face today. It is a disease that kills 800,000 people each year, the majority of which are children under the age of five and pregnant women. Ninety percent of malaria deaths are in Africa, a continent that already struggles with economic development, and where malaria only worsens development prospects. If a child is sick from malaria, he cannot go to school, he cannot receive a proper education, and his parents cannot work because they must stay home to take care of their ill child. Malaria alone costs Africa an estimated $12 billion each year in lost productivity. That extra $12 billion could have an extremely positive impact on a continent that consistently ranks at the bottom of the human development index.

The United Nations Foundation created the Nets Go! campaign to offer Koreans –from students to CEOs - the opportunity to send a net and save a life. It only costs 10,000 won, or the cost of two coffees, to send a life-saving insecticide-treated bed net to protect a family in Africa. Every 45 seconds a child dies of malaria, but with your help, we can end malaria deaths in Africa
